Valentine's Day!

We will be having a Valentine's Day celebration on Tuesday afternoon.  If your child is interested in bringing Valentines for the class, please have him/her bring one for every classmate (20).  In order to save time passing them out, please just have your child sign his/her name (and not write the names of each classmate on them).  We're looking forward to a fun afternoon!

Dear Parents,

I want to let you know that your children did an awesome job on their Natural Resources slide presentations last Thursday. On Wednesday, Miss Williams observed them and gave them feedback. Thursday, before their presentations to me and the class, I let them see those comments and have some time to make adjustments. They stepped up, made adjustments and presented in a wonderful manner. Today we will reflect on what we learned and complete self-evaluations.

We are continuing in our science studies of energy, but moving on to physical science. This week and next, that will include the study of energy as it relates to potential and kinetic energy, and speed. As I mentioned last week, we will be using Hot Wheels cars and tracks to explore these concepts.

The student council wanted me to remind you that they will be selling candy grams for Valentine's Day beginning today, through next Monday. The candy grams are 75 cents each, or $10 for a whole class. These will not be sold in the office or classrooms, but at lunch for 3-5th and 6-8th grades. Third through fifth grade lunch is from 12:15 until 12:45 and middle school lunch is from 12:45 until 1:15.

Have a great week!

Science this quarter

I hope all of you enjoyed a wonderful break with your families!
We are beginning the new year with a focus on science. This week we will be studying about natural earth processes and how they affect humans. Specifically, we will be taking one of those processes, earthquakes, and trying to design and build a structure that will withstand a virtual earthquake. Students will need to bring in a small Lego person or other small figure to place in the structure by Wednesday. Our earthquakes will take place on Thursday!

Museum Reminder

Just a reminder that our museum trip for those who can attend is tomorrow, Friday, December 16, starting at 10a.m. We will meet students and their families at the doors and set you on a scavenger hunt to find items and displays that relate to the Nevada projects we have been conducting this year. It should be fun, and there will be prizes for those who find the most items.

We hope you can join us!

Museum Trip

We would like to celebrate the conclusion of our Nevada studies with a trip to the Churchill County Museum. We will be gathering there on Friday, December 16 at 10 a.m. We realize this is a busy time of year and that all of you may not be able to make it, however we wanted to offer the opportunity to those who are able to be there.

We expect that we should be done well before noon, but an exact time will depend on the number of people who are able to attend. Tomorrow we will be sending out a sign-up form to both fourth grade classes. Please respond so we are able to have a better idea of how many to expect.

Thank you for all you do to support your children in their learning!

Last week of November

It's hard to believe, but this is the last week of November!

Reminder: Our map presentations will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, November 29, from 1:30 until 2:30 in our classroom!

Wednesday afternoon we will be taking a little walk to see one of the sites that was considered for Oasis Academy before it opened, as an entry event to our new project. Please make sure your child has warm outerwear with them, as it is supposed to be quite chilly on Wednesday.

Thank you and have a wonderful week!!

Next week and Happy Thanksgiving

I hope you all have a fabulous Thanksgiving with your families!!

Next week we will complete our map project and begin our next project about how human systems interact with the environment in Nevada. We will continue to use our maps as we proceed. We are hoping to have a special wrap-up of our Nevada studies before Christmas and will let you know the details as they become firm.

Please remember that our Map presentations for parents will occur next Tuesday, November 29th, from 1:30 to 2:30 in our classroom. Most students have been working hard and we are almost finished.

Enjoy your long weekend!
